Significant Past Projects

The Junior League of Corpus Christi, Inc. is proud that many of our past projects, now turned over to the community, continue to have a significant positive impact in the lives of families and individuals living in Corpus Christi. A few of these projects, listed in order of their inception, are described below.

The United Way of the Coastal Bend - In 1937, Lorine Spoonts gathered twelve young women and formed what later became The Junior League of Corpus Christi, Inc. One of the first projects of this small group was to research the Central Index Bureau, forerunner of the United Way of the Coastal Bend. Family Counseling Service - In 1940 the Junior Assistance Club, which became The Junior League of Corpus Christi, Inc. in 1944, established Family Welfare Services. This organization provided facilities and personnel to assist families in difficulty. Now known as Family Counseling Service, this organization is           located at 3833 S. Del Mar Student Loan Fund - In 1959 The Junior League of Corpus Christi, Inc. established the Del Mar Student Loan Fund to make higher education at our local Del Mar College a possibility for needy students. This fund still exists today.

Mental Health and Mental Retardation Agency - In 1962 The Junior League of Corpus Christi, Inc. began providing funds and volunteers to the Parent-Child Guidance Center, forerunner of the Mental Health and Mental Retardation Agency (MHMR). Volunteers conducted intake interviews, led sensitivity groups, and administered psychological and intelligence tests. This agency is located at 1630 S. Brownlee Blvd., Corpus Christi, TX 78404. Volunteer Center - In 1968 The Junior League of Corpus Christi, Inc. provided funds to form a Volunteer Bureau, and in 1970 the League obtained the charter for the Voluntary Action Center, now known as the Volunteer Center. This organization recruits and places volunteers for nonprofit community agencies. The center is located at 505 S. Water Street, Corpus Christi, TX 78401. (361) 887-8282

Bayfest - In 1976 The Junior League of Corpus Christi, Inc., along with the Arts Council, organized Bayfest, an annual family festival that provides a vehicle through which area nonprofit organizations can raise funds. Texas State Aquarium - In 1978 The Junior League of Corpus Christi, Inc. cosponsored a study for a city aquarium with Alumni of Leadership Corpus Christi. The League provided funds for this program, which is now known as the Texas State Aquarium and is located at 2710 N. Shoreline Blvd., Corpus Christi, TX 78402 (361) 881-1200

The Women's Shelter, Inc. - In 1981 The Junior League of Corpus Christi, Inc. provided support to establish the Women's Shelter, an assistance facility for abused women and their young children. The shelter is located at 813 Buford Avenue, Corpus Christi, TX 78404. (361) 884-2900

Teen Court - In 1990 The Junior League of Corpus Christi, Inc., in collaboration with the Nueces County Juvenile Probation Department and the City of Corpus Christi, provided funds and support to establish Teen Court. This program has proven to be an effective alternative judicial system for first-time juvenile offenders, who are required to fulfill service hours to the community as part of their sentence.

KidsPlace Unlimited - In 1990 The Junior League of Corpus Christi, Inc. collaborated with the City of Corpus Christi to establish a community playground in Cole Park on Ocean Drive. In 1999 this playground, known as KidsPlace Unlimited, was expanded and improved so that it is now almost entirely handicap-accessible. C.A.S.A. (Court Appointed Special Advocate) of Nueces County - In 1991 The Junior League of Corpus Christi, Inc. collaborated with Nueces County Court Systems and the Department of Human Services to develop C.A.S.A. of Nueces County to speak on behalf of abused and neglected children.
