Christmas Tree Forest: A Reading Wonderland is a showcase of Christmas trees at the Art Museum of South Texas decorated to mirror children’s books chosen by participating schools. This month long exhibit, with the help of numerous community partners, is displayed during the winter and closes in mid-December with Free Family Fun day, which is free to the public.
Participating schools will decorate their trees to be displayed at the museum during regular business hours. In effort to meet a community need of early childhood education, the Junior League of Corpus Christi will arrange field trips for children ages 0-6 that live in a financially deficit area of Corpus Christi. A field trip curriculum was developed for Pre-K -1st grade students of schools found in this target area in hopes of increasing literacy development, cognitive skills and creativity. Junior League volunteers will host these field trips and each student that attends will received a JLCC book bag with take home activities and a free childrens book.
In 2015, the Christmas Tree Forest exhibit delighted more than 7,000 children and families that visited during the month. With the help of the Antonio E. Garcia Arts & Education Center, all trees and decorations are donated to families in need at the close of the exhibit.
