This program which focuses on literacy and cognitive skills will include two signature events: Christmas Tree Forest (CTF) and a new large event to be held in the spring. CTF will continue to follow a literacy theme with trees decorated based on children’s picture books and the respective books displayed next to the tree for visitors. The committee will work to increase field trip attendance for children preK-1st grade from schools in the target area. A curriculum for the field trip will increase participant’s literacy development, cognitive skills, and creativity skills. These children will receive a JLCC book bag including a free book. Free Family Fun Day will continue to give children goodie bags and encourage schools in the target area to perform during the day to increase attendance of families from the target area. Student volunteers will be encouraged to serve as docents at their tree. Trees will be donated to families in the target area afterwards. For the spring, the committee will work to develop a new literacy focused event that brings in various community partners to host booths, as well as area schools to perform for the event attendees.
